Numbing Options at Canobie Dental

From needle-free Kovanaze to traditional local anesthetic, we offer different ways to keep treatment comfortable.

Needle-free numbing with Kovanaze

For certain treatment involving upper front teeth, Kovanaze may provide numbing without a dental injection. It is given as a nasal spray. We’ll let you know when it is an appropriate option for your visit.

What people call “Novocaine”

Many people call dental numbing “Novocaine.” Today we use newer numbing medicines that are safer and more effective at getting you numb. Numbing agents like Lidocaine and Articaine are commonly used today.

Numbing gel

Before an injection, we can use topical numbing gel on the gum. A stronger compounded topical gel is also available when appropriate.

Other gentle options

Some early cavities can be treated without drilling or a numbing injection. For the right tooth, options such as Curodont or SDF may allow a more conservative approach.

A little extra help relaxing

Tell us before we begin if you have had trouble getting numb, dislike needles, or feel anxious about dental treatment. We can take more time, check your comfort before starting, pause when needed, and discuss sedation when appropriate.
