Routine and surgical extractions

Some teeth can be removed relatively simply.

Others may be broken below the gumline, difficult to reach, impacted, or shaped in a way that requires a surgical approach.

Wisdom teeth

Not every wisdom tooth needs to be removed.

Some wisdom teeth come in normally and can remain healthy. Others become impacted, difficult to clean, painful, infected, decayed, or harmful to nearby teeth.

Canobie Dental performs routine wisdom teeth removal and evaluates whether removal or continued monitoring is the better option.

Severely impacted teeth and cases requiring IV sedation, deep sedation, or general anesthesia are outside our in-office treatment scope.

Impacted teeth and retained root tips

A tooth may be partly or completely trapped below the gums or bone, or part of a root may remain after a tooth breaks or a previous extraction.

Canobie Dental offers removal of retained root tips and remaining tooth fragments when treatment is appropriate.

Bone grafting after an extraction

Bone naturally changes after a tooth is removed.

If you may want a dental implant later, or if preserving the shape of the bone is important for another treatment, a bone graft may be recommended at the time of extraction.

Planning ahead can help avoid losing useful bone before the next stage of treatment.

Sinus grafting and dental implant surgery

Dental implants in the upper back part of the mouth sometimes require additional bone below the sinus.

Canobie Dental provides sinus grafting and dental implant placement for appropriate patients.

When grafting, implants, and replacement teeth are part of the same treatment plan, we coordinate them together from the beginning.

Sedation for dental surgery

Dental surgery can make some patients nervous.

Canobie Dental offers minimal and oral sedation for appropriate patients and procedures.

Sedation can help you feel calmer and more relaxed during treatment. We do not provide IV sedation, deep sedation, or general anesthesia.

Before your procedure

We will review your health history, medications, allergies, and the procedure being planned.

If you are receiving sedation, you will receive additional instructions about eating, drinking, medications, transportation, and having someone drive you home.

Follow the instructions we give you for your specific procedure.

After an extraction or oral surgery

Some soreness, swelling, and mild bleeding are normal after many dental surgeries.

We will give you instructions for eating, cleaning the area, controlling discomfort, and protecting the extraction site while it heals.

Avoid smoking and vaping during healing because they can increase the risk of complications.

When should I call?

Call the office if you have:

• pain that becomes significantly worse instead of improving
• persistent or heavy bleeding
• increasing swelling
• fever
• drainage or a foul taste
• a medication problem
• another concern about your recovery

Difficulty breathing or swallowing, severe uncontrolled bleeding, or another medical emergency requires emergency medical care.
