When should my baby first see a dentist?

We recommend a first dental visit when the first tooth appears and no later than the first birthday.

Preventing cavities

We look at brushing, diet, tooth development, health history, fluoride exposure, and other factors that can affect your child's risk.

Depending on your child's needs, prevention may include cleanings, fluoride or fluoride-free tooth varnish, sealants, home-care advice, Curodont, silver diamine fluoride, and other remineralizing treatments.

We have fluoride-free and holistic options for families who prefer them.

Questions to bring to your child's visit

A parent or caregiver can help us understand what makes dental visits easier for their child. Older children and teens can share their own questions, too.

• What would help my child understand the visit or take a break?
• Which concerns need treatment now, and which can be monitored?
• How are their teeth and bite developing?
• What can we work on at home before the next visit?

A gentle approach to early cavities

Not every early cavity needs to be drilled right away.

Some small cavities can be treated with products that help strengthen and remineralize teeth.

Canobie Dental offers Curodont, a non-invasive option for selected areas of early tooth decay before a cavity has broken down the tooth surface. The treatment uses peptide-based technology and gives families another minimally invasive option for appropriate early lesions.

SDF, or silver diamine fluoride, is another alternative option. Like Curodont, it is applied to teeth with a gentle applicator or swab. It may need to be reapplied more than once to be effective. Our goal is to use safe, gentle treatment options whenever appropriate.

Growing teeth and orthodontics

Children's mouths change quickly, and our teeth are actually moving throughout our lives.

If we see crowding, a narrow upper jaw, a crossbite, unusual tooth eruption, or another orthodontic concern, we can discuss the best plan of action with you.
