When does a tooth need a crown?

A crown may be recommended when a tooth has lost too much structure for a smaller filling or restoration.

Crown materials

Digital scanning instead of traditional impressions

We use digital scanners to create a detailed three-dimensional model of your teeth.

For many treatments, this eliminates the need for traditional impression material.

The scan can be used to design crowns and other restorations and allows us to evaluate the bite and fit before the restoration is completed. Our patients appreciate the additional speed, comfort, and convenience that digital scanning provides.

Designed and made in the office

After the tooth is prepared and scanned, the restoration can be designed digitally and fabricated in the office.

This gives us direct control over the shape, fit, contacts, bite, and appearance of the restoration.

When the restoration is ready, we try it in, make any needed adjustments, and bond it to the tooth.

Treating deep cavities conservatively

When decay is close to the nerve of a tooth, removing every last layer of affected tooth structure can sometimes create unnecessary risk to the pulp.

In appropriate cases, we may use conservative techniques such as indirect pulp treatment to remove infected decay while protecting the deeper part of the tooth.
