Mercury-Free Dentistry & Amalgam Removal in Newport, NH
Canobie Dental places tooth-colored restorations and evaluates older amalgam fillings for replacement when their condition or a treatment plan makes removal appropriate.
For new restorative treatment, we use modern tooth-colored and ceramic-based options selected for the tooth, bite, esthetic needs, and treatment plan.
When might an older amalgam filling be replaced?
Replacement may make sense when a filling is:
Patient preference can also be part of the discussion when replacement is clinically reasonable.
- cracked or broken
- leaking or no longer sealing well
- associated with new decay
- excessively worn
- part of a tooth that needs a different restoration
- being replaced for another appropriate patient-specific restorative reason
Do all amalgam fillings need to be removed?
No.
We do not recommend removing every healthy, intact amalgam filling simply because it contains mercury.
Removing any existing restoration also removes some tooth structure, so the condition of the filling and the tooth should be considered before replacement.
