About Washington
Washington is one of New Hampshire's most distinctive highland towns.
The community was settled in 1768 and incorporated on December 13, 1776. The town identifies itself as the first New Hampshire town incorporated under the name of George Washington.
Washington Center sits at about 1,532 feet above sea level, which the town identifies as the highest town center in New Hampshire. The surrounding landscape is hilly, rocky, heavily forested, and noticeably higher than much of the Connecticut River valley to the west.
At the center of town stands the Washington Town Hall and Meetinghouse, built in 1787. The building originally served both civic and religious purposes and remained the site of town meetings for more than two centuries.
Washington is also home to Pillsbury State Park, a heavily wooded landscape of ponds, wetlands, and trails. The park forms part of the Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway, connecting Washington's local trail system to the broader region between Mount Monadnock and Mount Sunapee.
The high town center, historic Meetinghouse, Route 31 corridor, forests, ponds, and Pillsbury State Park give Washington a character that is easy to recognize even among the other small rural towns of western New Hampshire.
