About Sullivan County
Sullivan County covers the west-central part of New Hampshire along the Vermont border.
The county was created in 1827 from part of Cheshire County and was named for Revolutionary War leader John Sullivan. Newport was chosen as the county seat and remains the county seat today.
Sullivan County includes 14 towns and one city:
Acworth, Charlestown, Claremont, Cornish, Croydon, Goshen, Grantham, Langdon, Lempster, Newport, Plainfield, Springfield, Sunapee, Unity, and Washington.
Its western edge follows the Connecticut River, while communities farther east reach into the Lake Sunapee region.
That mix of small towns, rural roads, river communities, and regional centers means the trip to Newport can be very different depending on where in the county you live.
