Plymouth Notch and Calvin Coolidge
Few Vermont towns have a historical identity as distinctive as Plymouth.
Plymouth Notch was the birthplace and childhood home of Calvin Coolidge, the 30th president of the United States.
After President Warren Harding died in August 1923, Coolidge was staying at the family home in Plymouth Notch. In the early morning hours of August 3, his father administered the presidential oath in the family parlor.
The surrounding village survives today as the President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site, including Coolidge's birthplace and homestead, the general store, church, schoolhouse, barns, cheese factory, museum, and cemetery where the president is buried.
A landscape shaped by farms, forests, and mountains
Plymouth's identity extends well beyond its presidential history.
The town developed around farming and mining, and old stone walls, former farmsteads, and traces of early industry remain throughout its mountainous landscape.
Plymouth is also home to Coolidge State Forest and Coolidge State Park, where forests that reclaimed former farmland now form part of one of Vermont's longstanding public recreation landscapes.
Plymouth Notch, Tyson, Plymouth Union, Route 100, Route 100A, surrounding mountains, forests, and lakes make the town immediately recognizable as a small Green Mountain community.
