About Grafton
Grafton is a large rural town in Grafton County with village areas, old farms, densely forested hills, ponds, rivers, and extensive undeveloped land.
U.S. Route 4 runs through the community and remains its primary regional highway.
One of Grafton's best-known landmarks is Ruggles Mine on Isinglass Mountain. The historic mica and feldspar mine became nationally known for its mineral deposits and unusual open workings. After being closed to visitors for several years, the mine reopened to the public in 2024 and continues to offer mineral collecting and exploration.
Grafton's landscape also sits across two major watersheds. The Smith River flows toward the Merrimack River system, while the Mascoma River drains toward the Connecticut River. The town includes Grafton Center, East Grafton, ponds, a town beach, forests, and large stretches of rural land.
That combination of mining history, mountain terrain, water, forests, and scattered village areas gives Grafton a character that is quite different from the Lake Sunapee communities to the south.
