About Enfield
Enfield sits in Grafton County in the Upper Valley and has been shaped by water, transportation, industry, and one of New Hampshire's best-known Shaker communities.
Mascoma Lake is one of the town's defining geographic features. The Mascoma River also runs through Enfield, and waterways in the area helped support mills and industry for generations.
The Enfield Shaker community was established in 1793 along Mascoma Lake. At its height, the community farmed thousands of acres and built more than 100 structures.
Today the Enfield Shaker Museum preserves the historic village, including the monumental Great Stone Dwelling, completed in 1841.
Railroad development and the original Shaker Bridge helped shift commercial activity toward what became downtown Enfield. U.S. Route 4 and Route 4A remain important roads through the community, and the Northern Rail Trail follows the former railroad corridor through the Mascoma River and lake landscape.
