Cavendish villages & an unusual place in medical history
Cavendish was chartered in 1761, with European settlement beginning later in that decade.

In 1848, railroad foreman Phineas Gage survived a severe brain injury when an iron tamping rod passed through his skull during blasting work near Cavendish.
His survival and subsequent behavioral changes became one of the best-known early cases in the study of relationships between the brain and behavior.
The story is one of the unusual historical details that distinguishes Cavendish from neighboring Vermont communities.
