About Canaan
Canaan has two particularly recognizable centers.
Downtown Canaan is centered around the intersection of U.S. Route 4 and Route 118, where the Town Green remains a focal point for community activity. The Northern Rail Trail also passes through Canaan, with a trailhead on Depot Street providing easy access to downtown.
A short distance away, Canaan Street Lake is lined by one of the town's most historic areas. Construction of the Canaan Meeting House began in 1792, and the building was completed in 1793. It still overlooks the lake and remains a focal point of the Canaan Historic District.
Water also helps define the community. The Indian River flows through Canaan Village before joining the Mascoma River west of the village. The Mascoma River receives water from Canaan Street Lake and continues west toward Enfield and Lebanon.
Between the village, lake, historic district, rivers, and rail trail, Canaan has a recognizable identity that extends well beyond its location on Route 4.
