About Alstead
Alstead is a rural Cheshire County community shaped by agriculture, water-powered industry, and the Cold River.
The town received its New Hampshire charter in 1763.
In 1793, Ephraim and Elisha Kingsbury established what the town identifies as the first paper mill in New Hampshire on the Cold River. Streams and ponds later powered several other small mills.
That industrial history survives in East Alstead at Chase's Mill, a historic turbine-powered water mill.
In the village, the Shedd-Porter Memorial Library is another unmistakable landmark. Built in 1910, the Beaux-Arts stone library was a gift from Alstead native John G. Shedd and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Alstead is also closely associated with Vilas Pool Park, created through another local philanthropic gift. The park contains the only carillon in Cheshire County.
The Cold River, historic mills, stone library, village center, and surrounding rural landscape give Alstead a particularly strong local identity.
