About Acworth
Acworth developed around several distinct settlements rather than one large village.
The historic Acworth Center sits on high land near the town common. Both the current Town Hall and the Church on the Hill were built in 1821. Behind them is a surviving row of historic horse sheds, one of only a small number of such structures still standing in New Hampshire.
South Acworth developed differently. The Cold River powered a series of mills that once ground grain, sawed lumber, and produced other goods. As mill activity grew, settlement shifted from the hilltop toward the river valley.
The South Acworth Village Store, built in 1865 with Union Hall upstairs, remains one of the community's recognizable historic gathering places.
Old stone walls, cellar holes, rural roads, and the separate identities of Acworth Center, South Acworth, East Acworth, and surrounding areas still reflect the town's agricultural and mill history.
